One of the places sacred par excellence of the Balearic Islands is the Monastery of Lluc in Mallorca, spiritual heart of the island and place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants for centuries, and there lies the Virgen de Lluc, a black image of the Virgin to which he has a lot of devotion, the patron saint of Mallorca, around which many legends tissue have.
Lluc Monastery is located in the municipality of Escorca, which is located in the Serra de Tramuntana, where are the highest peaks in the Balearics. Maybe that's the least populated municipality of the island.
That area is inhabited for millennia, they suggest that there are prehistoric remains nearby. They found several prehistoric burial caves, known as Ses Cometes dels Morts the periods of the Bronze Age and Iron, where they were found, apart from multiple objects of those historical periods, human remains in wooden coffins, some of which you can be seen in the museum of the Monastery of Lluc.
Later, during the Islamic period, these territories belonged to the district of Al-Yibal (the mountain). The difficulty presented by the terrain was a great help to the Muslims who resisted the Catalan conquerors until 1232 they were up order.
After the Muslim defeat and subsequent cast performed the winners of the territories of Mallorca, the Templars received for his role in the conquest several properties on the island, including the grounds of the farmhouse of Lluch. Although retained direct ownership of these territories, gave the Templars use this property to different people for cultivation in return for an annual tribute to the order. After the dissolution of the Knights Templar in 1314 the properties they had in Lluc are transferred to the Order of San Juan del Hospital, although it was not long that appeared a brotherhood that over this property were done, the Brotherhood of Workers , which they were appointed by the Bishop and Pastor proposal Juries Escorca, sometimes with the intervention of the Jury of the Kingdom, being chosen among the most illustrious citizens of the military or merchant.
The first news that is on a chapel in Lluc dating back to 1268, although the real reason why you do not really know this chapel was built in such a remote place, but have circulated various ideas and of course, legends to explain this event. At first it was said that was built motivated by divine inspiration, then move to the legend of the discovery of the image of Our Lady of Lluc to which we will refer later, but it seems that the real reason was the great distance that had to the parish of Sant Pere de Escorca, which was what was closer and he had all rights as a central parish of the municipality. As early as 1273 there is news about the massive influx of pilgrims to the site, to venerate the sacred image of the Virgin, fervor that was extended not only to all populations of the island of Mallorca, but even beyond. Over time the chapel of Santa Maria de Lluc, which is how it was called, was becoming more important and was expanded with various donations on adjoining land and houses as well as reforms of the chapel, first, and later basilica later to be the monastery as you can see today. Their rights are also expanded, reaching absorb the importance and functions that had the aforementioned parish of Sant Pere de Escorca relegating to the background

A summer trip to Mallorca gives us the opportunity to discover its wonderful hidden treasures of the coast. Beyond its many and varied beaches, there is little known truly spectacular, less often inaccessible corners. One of the most impressive is the Torrent de Pareis and Sa Calobra Beach.
The Torrent de Pareis is a natural watercourse which rises in the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana and rock their way through the narrow opening through spectacular gorges up to 200 meters to the sea, where he died peacefully in this little cove called Sa Calobra.
getting there is not easy, which has ensured that this place has come down to us virtually intact. You can go by sea, taking a boat leaving daily from the Port de Sóller, or by road, if we are willing to face a hell of curves among which called "the knot of his tie."

Sa Dragonera is one of the migration routes of waterfowl Europe which makes it an outstanding natural observatory during the autumn and spring. On the island there is no settlement by making it necessary to take with you from Sant Elm drink and food for the planned tour (and do not forget to bring your waste, to return by boat). The walk to the Tramuntana lighthouse is particularly suitable for family excursions given its short length and difficulty. For more experienced hikers recommend the ascent to the summit of Na Pòpia, where stood the Far Vell de sa Dragonera.

Their rights are also expanded, reaching absorb the importance and functions that had the aforementioned parish of Sant Pere de Escorca relegating it to the background.

It dates back to the Islamic period, in the farmhouse of Oloron. The documented history begins in the XIII century, during the reconquest of Mallorca, with its castle the center of it. During the Aragonese occupation of the Kingdom of Mallorca, its Muslim inhabitants resisted in the Castle of Alaró, one of only roquers Mallorca- castles, this being one of the last places where the Christian reconquest arrived in the islands.

The noble Majorcan Guillermo Cabrit and Guillermo Bassa, following their capture, they were condemned to die roasted over hot coals by King Alfonso III of Aragon, as indicated by the name of one of the defenders of the castle, which during the resistance he had not recognized as the invading king of Majorcan kingdom, remaining loyal to their King James.
Railway Alaró [edit]
In 1880, Jaime Comes Frau and José Sureda Villalonga, two citizens of Alaró, got the concession of a railway line, managed by the Company Railroad Alaró, united the people with the station of the railway line Palma-Inca, located in Consell place (then under the town of Alaró). Until 1922, year in which they were acquired two locomotives gasoline (baptized with the name San San Cabrit and Bassa), rail traction was carried by mules upstream and downstream simple gravity. The railroad worked until 1934. Between 1944 and 1945 new routes were installed, these being used by Ferrocarriles de Mallorca to transport lignite from mines and Consell station until 1951, which were finally lifted.
First village with electricity Mallorca [edit]
Also noteworthy was the first municipality in Mallorca have an urban electricity distribution network. The opening of the electricity network in the village took place on August 15, 1901, coinciding with the festivities of the town early in the twentieth century. According to the chronicles, the people dressed up and there was a great influx of visitors from all over the island, eager to taste the wonder offered by this energy. Currently, the distribution is unified with the rest of the island; but as a sign of the importance it had, for the island of Majorca, that first distribution network, on May 8, 2000, the Insular Council of Mallorca, declared of cultural interest, with category of monument, tower old factory Alaró electricity. This tower was restored by the town council in 2001 as part of the celebration of the centenary of electricity in Alaró and Mallorca.1
Economy [edit]
One of the most important economic activities in Alaró was, for years, the shoe industry, which once had in the municipality until thirty factories and more than two thousand people dedicated to it. At present, the economic activity has been reduced to a minimum, with only one major company in the sector.
They were also important lignite mines, now closed day relevant to the activities of electricity generation and distribution, and in his later years belonged to the utility mains, currently part of the Endesa group.
Currently, the village of Alaró, like many others on the island, has become a dormitory town, working most of its inhabitants in the capital of the island of Mallorca--Palma or in the nearby town of Inca.
